Below are general descriptions of KMEK role responsibilities. There is some flexibility to these positions as KMEK evolves and volunteers have different strengths. You'll receive guidance from outgoing leadership and have room to grow this role as you learn more about the needs of the chapter and members.
President’s Responsibilities
The Chapter President writes an Annual Chapter President’s Report to OAKE and sends “newsy” quarterly reports and pictures to the OAKE Kodály Envoy editor, MKMEA bulletin editor, KMR editor, and webmaster of KMEK website. The Chapter President may want to apply for a Division Chapter Grant or LEAF grant through OAKE. The Chapter President fills out Divisional Reports prior to Divisional meetings (usually twice yearly), OAKE reports prior to the national OAKE conference, and KMEA board reports prior to the three KMEA board meetings. The president reads other newsletters and reports and keeps in touch with other chapters.
The Chapter President contacts OAKE members who select “KMEK” to welcome them and should contact OAKE members who have not affiliated with a chapter. The Chapter President engages KMEK members in taking ownership in the chapter, identify fringe members to draw them in, encourage leadership in committed members, etc.
The Chapter President, with the Chapter Executive Board will: a. set local calendar and secure workshop clinicians and fees b. organize efficient meetings and workshops, with specific duties covered c. submit information to the webmaster in a timely manner d. check local universities to see if they can offer graduate credit for workshops e. summarize and utilize feedback from evaluation sheets to plan future workshops
The Chapter President works closely with the treasurer to ensure the accuracy of the treasurer’s reports and records. These records include an annual fiscal report, workshop income and outgoing receipts, the Sharon Parks Memorial Scholarship donations and distributions, and other fundraising items.
The Chapter President holds a vision of where the local organization is or should be going and works to guide it there.
The Chapter President should periodically check with other Board members to make sure that they are aware of their duties and KMEK’s activities. The president should make certain that no one person is overburdened with duties and may appoint extra board members as needed.
The Chapter President should make sure that the possibility of having Kodály trained clinicians present at state and area music conventions is investigated.
The Chapter President serves as a connection to the National and Divisional organizations (OAKE and MKMEA). The Chapter President should attend National and Divisional conferences (or appoints a representative to attend) and bring the interests and concerns of the local membership to the Divisional and National levels. The Chapter President should represent KMEK on the KMEA board as an affiliate member and attend three KMEA board meetings per year.
